I recently spent a week in Mississippi, primarily in Jones County and the town of Laurel, and I was pleasantly surprised by what I discovered. Despite Mississippi’s often low rankings in various metrics, Laurel exudes a sense of progress and vitality. The downtown area is undergoing a rejuvenation with repaved streets, new sidewalks, and bustling shops, and there’s an evident pride in preserving its rich history, including its designation on the National Register of Historic Places. Laurel boasts a dynamic community led by proactive leaders, a thriving entrepreneurial spirit, and a unique school calendar structure focused on boosting student success. Additionally, Laurel’s ties to oil and gas industry offer a distinct perspective on energy, climate change, and global affairs. Overall, my time in Laurel, Mississippi left me invigorated and fascinated by the positive momentum in this dynamic town.
