I attended a performance of Das Rheingold at Vienna’s famed State Opera, surrounded by history, prestige, and one of the world’s great orchestras. Yet despite deeply appreciating the artistry, setting, and cultural significance of the experience, I found myself dozing through much of the performance and realizing that appreciation and enjoyment are not always the same thing. The evening reminded me that travel is not just about discovering what you love—it is also about learning what does not resonate with you, and gaining a better understanding of yourself in the process.
