How We Value a Good Teacher

Reflecting on my own educational journey, I express gratitude for the remarkable teachers who shaped my perspective and instilled a love for learning. Recently, stumbling upon my grandmother’s 1905 teaching contract, where she earned a mere $10 for a month’s work, sparked contemplation on the stark disparity in teacher compensation over the years. My research revealed that American teachers currently receive an average hourly wage of $24 per hour. The U.S. ranks 12th in starting salaries for teachers, compared to international counterparts. It now becomes clear  to me that addressing this issue involves navigating complex factors such as the teacher shortage, potential resignations, fringe benefits, and fair compensation for various educational roles. Ultimately, acknowledging and compensating our educators better emerges as a crucial step in recognizing their invaluable contributions.
