
I headed out into the chaos of Coachella in Indio with nothing more than curiosity and a golf cart, only to find myself accidentally becoming an “illegal Uber driver” for about five seconds. After two desperate festivalgoers offered me $100 for a ride, I briefly embraced my new transportation career before being pulled over and ticketed for driving a golf cart illegally on a street with too high a speed limit — and for not wearing a seatbelt in a cart that didn’t even have one. In the end, what felt to me like a funny little act of helpfulness and adventure became a nearly $400 lesson in California traffic law, but also a reminder that sometimes the best stories come from stepping out of spectator mode and into the madness itself.
