Having recently visited Mississippi, I decided to rewatch “The Help” on my flight back to Seattle, and unexpectedly found myself overcome with emotions and tears. The film, set in Jackson, Mississippi during the early ’60s, vividly captures the racism and mistreatment black maids endured from their white employers. Reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement and the profound social changes during my formative years, the movie resurfaced memories of significant events and underscored the challenge of conveying their gravity to those who didn’t experience them firsthand, particularly my children.
