In my recent Shoeshine post, I shared an encounter at a shoeshine stand where the service provider offered me the option to “pay whatever you want.” Initially perplexed, I deliberated on what would be a fair compensation for the excellent service provided. Ultimately, I settled on a payment, but upon further reflection, I realized I may have underestimated the value of the service. I outline six steps for handling similar situations in the future, emphasizing fairness, gratitude, and communication. Reflecting on this experience, I have resolved to be better prepared to compensate service providers appropriately and express my appreciation for their work.
