
At 82, I am finding that navigating the American health-care system has become a job of its own, with endless paperwork, missing records, long waits, and appointments that disappear at the last minute. I am seriously considering hiring a health-care advocate to keep everything connected, but if someone with my persistence, resources, and technological skills is exhausted by the process, what happens to the people who lack those advantages—or are simply too sick to manage it all?
